Shadows in Paradise: The Dark History of the CNMI Guest Worker Program (Signed Hardcover Edition)

Personally signed by author Kelvin Rodeo

For decades, they helped build the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

They built the hotels.

They built the factories.

They built the roads, schools, businesses, and homes.

They raised families, formed communities, and left their mark on an island chain they came to love.

Yet their stories were rarely told.

Until now.

Shadows in Paradise is more than a history book. It is an act of remembrance.

Written by Saipan-born author Kelvin Rodeo, the son of two foreign workers who came to the CNMI in pursuit of a better life, this groundbreaking work uncovers the complex, often forgotten history of the CNMI Guest Worker Program and the generations of people whose lives were shaped by it.

Through historical research, government records, court documents, newspaper archives, and personal testimony, Rodeo traces the story of a labor system that brought tens of thousands of workers from across Asia and the Pacific to the islands. But beyond the politics and policies lies something far more important:

The human story.

The mothers and fathers who sacrificed everything to create opportunities for their children.

The workers who spent years, and sometimes decades, helping build the CNMI while living with uncertainty about their future.

The families whose stories became woven into the fabric of these islands.

For many readers, Shadows in Paradise will feel deeply personal. You may see your parents in these pages. Your grandparents. Your neighbors. Perhaps even yourself.

For others, it will be an eye-opening journey into one of the least understood chapters of American history.

Either way, this is a story that deserves to be remembered.

This special signed hardcover edition is:

• A personally signed copy from the author

• A meaningful keepsake for current and former CNMI residents, foreign workers, and their descendants

• A lasting tribute to the people whose labor, sacrifice, and resilience helped shape the modern Northern Mariana Islands

History remembers politicians.

History remembers governments.

History remembers headlines.

But history is also built by ordinary people whose names rarely appear in textbooks.

Shadows in Paradise was written for them.

And for everyone who believes their stories deserve to be remembered.

Hey there—welcome in!
